Viveros began this series just before Covid-19 hit; at that time, he was working on the first piece, coincidentally entitled ‘Changes’. Roughly a week later, the world as we knew it had changed. That time was very stressful for Viveros: his wife works in a hospital, and he lost his dog, Lola, in March. He didn’t feel sure of anything at that point. He continued to create while quarantined but felt the weight of the pandemic; visions of an apocalypse were reoccurring in his mind, so that became the title for this show. He started exploring new themes and going with whatever hit him at the time. The work became very personal and came together in a way he is proud of. He considers this one of his most memorable and powerful series to date.
California artist Brian M. Viveros has an unmistakably arresting hand. His highly detailed paintings of defiant kick-ass beauties summon a raw sense of intractability. Beautiful yet barbarous, they draw from the power of the feminine. These hyperreal portraits deliver cult-worthy heroines emerging triumphant from battle. Viveros’s work elevates the iconography of the femme fatale as an emblem of strength and power. ‘Apocalypse’ is a personal series of 9 new never before seen pieces in which Viveros explores new ideas and themes with his DirtyLAnd warriors in a world drastically changed by Covid-19 pandemic.
